Rob reckons I should post about being grumpy. That won’t be too difficult since I’m facing a 200 mile round trip on the M1 tomorrow (one of the UK’s most annoying motorways).

Meldrew

Speaking of motorways and driving, it’s not uncommon for people in the UK to moan about speed cameras. Actually  I think it’s OK to encourage us to drive more slower – but what gets me is that they’re a bit unnecessary. If the people that make the road laws really cared about making us drive slower, why don’t they just enforce speed limiters on every car? What am I missing?

Which brings me to another point – emmisions and the future oil shortages.

The faster you go, the more miles per gallon you do – which means more emmisions and using up our oil quicker than we need. Taxes on gas guzzlers and 4×4 cars are all well and good (they wind me up too by the way) but if they really cared about the environment, again, speed limiters might be a start.

Just saying. Tell me I’m being stupid.

Hey NP. Hate to burst your go-slow bubble, but going fast is actually better for the environment. the faster you go, the more momentum you have, which takes less motor power to move the car. the slower you go, the less momentum you have, more motor power you need to move the car and the more gas you chew.
which is also why small (lighter) cars are ace and big fat (and heavy) 4x4s and hummers are super shit as well as super annoying. (but we won’t talk about that now)
of course, going super fast all the time isn’t going to save the world ‘cos you’ll probably wind up A over T in a tree and fat lot of good that will do for the planet.

    Hi Lauren
You’re right, don’t get me started on 4×4’s.
Thanks for the point on momentum, I’m curious now, since the RAC reckons:
‘When you’re driving on motorways, stick to the speed limit. As well as being a safer speed, slowing by 10mph saves 40p on fuel for every 10 miles’
Not sure what to think now, must investigate.
    Anyone else have any thoughts?
