This interview with Victoria Pendletonis rather good. In case you were wondering, she's an Olympic winning cyclist. I like the way she's so honest about how unsatisfying winning can be. She beats herself up to strive for things she'll never achieve, so that merely winning isn't a pleasure, it's merely a relief. Immediately she's thinking what next, when it's over there's no purpose.

Sport is an unforgiving mistress, losing hurts, pain is an integral part of it, but no one talks about how it really feels to win.

Maybe you only feel elation if the outcome was a surprise?
If you work hard and expect to achieve something, then as she implies you either fail (and are disappointed) or you do what you expected and are underwhelmed.

in australia, you’re either into sport, or into art. that’s the kind of simplistic divisions we like around here.
but it’s interesting the similarities between the ‘winning’ of both.
in art you push yourself, beat yourself up for not achieving, work your guts out for the next project. and when it’s up and the opening is done, you’re onto the next one.
