Live Earth and News of the World

Famous Rob’s post on Live Earth reminded me of something I was pondering yesterday. I’ve been slightly confused about HOW much the average Joe in the UK really cares about environmental issues.

Not least since a recent poll suggests that most of Britons believe the scientific community of still debating the role of humans in our warming planet. And the hitherto non-existent coverage in the Red Top tabloids.

Then yesterday, the News of the World devotes it’s colour supplement to Live Earth. Has the reader led the paper or is it the other way around? Either way it seems significant.

And does it matter if Maddona and co are doing the opposite of what they’re saying (private jets and stuff) if flawed celebrity is the only way to get issues into the true mainstream? Well, what do you think?

    “So, what changes are YOU going to make, you know, to help save the planet?”
    “Erm,… well,… I… I’m… erm… walk more?”
    “That’s great, and who are you looking forward to seeing?”
    “Oh, that’s easy, …” [goes on for 30 seconds and lists the names of all the lovely bands she wants to see.
    This happened. It was a real interview – I think at the London concert, and the sad thing was that in the interview block I watched (about 4 people were interviewed) it was the standard dialogue.

    Actually NP, the Mirror has produced several things on environmental issues in the last few months. Including a couple of major section/suppliment type things.

    Okay Rob, I know you’re a Mirror fan, and I stand corrected on lumping all the Red Tops into one.
    But I’m afraid the Sun is still the most widely read, and won’t do anything unless they know their readers will have an interest.
    Hope it gets in the Star soon, I have weakness for naked women doing suggestive things with wind turbines.

    I think all these flashes of awareness in the media is cool. But I don’t know how many people are TRULY aware of practical steps they can take to help out. I mean saying, “I’ll walk more” when throughout their lives, they’ve been driving and commuting and what not isn’t really practical, you get what I mean? I think the entertainers have the power to inform but at the end of the day, only the government can be the real catalyst of change. I’m from Malaysia and I wish my country would do more! At least you guys get to watch Live Earth LIVE! While we poor souls are still burning electricity and money, watching it from the screen 🙂

    Hi mate. I agree it’s about people knowing what steps to take, and I’m glad the fact it’s something to even think about is maybe becoming mainstream, here at least!
