A friend of mine was moaning about the inevitable victory of Boney M over the Smiths. He made a good point about how bad is really good.
The Smiths should lose, it’s what they were about. If they won, they’d be popular which would be plain wrong.
So a vote for Boney M is actually a vote for the Smiths.
We win.

Have you actually considered, for one minute, that you may have not done enough for The Smiths NP?
You claim(ed) that a vote for Boney M was a vote for irony – and yet you have no idea who actually voted for them.
You also assumed – before every round that my argument would focus on the irony/humour/comedy etc – but if you read them again they are not.
Your last post was more Cowell than anything I have done. Instead of focussing on what you thought was magically about The Smiths, you spent way too much time trashing Boney M.

This debate is interesting.
Whilst I do genuinely believe Boney M were good at what they did, there is an element of falsity I dislike about them. Whereas you could never say The Smiths had a lack of honesty.

You know what Mr M … and I swear I’m not doing this to be controvertial … but given Boney M were always honest about being a manufactured pop band, playing throwaway-songs, would you not say that is the ultimate proof of ‘honesty’?
Sure they may not of sung songs about ‘right-on’ issues like The Smiths, but then they didn’t have a lead singer who continually demonstrated a disregard towards anyone who wasn’t white or British – even if they shared the same political opinion and/or social circumstances.

the Smits should lose. it is the role they play in manchester music. I do not mean that they are losers (with mr. marr on guitar this is not possible), but they drew the 50% blueprint for bands to follow. they made it alright to be northern rock, showed that good tunes could survive (even in “stock aitken waterman” 80’s). what they did not show, was as important. they did not (to my knowlegde) embrace the fruits of their labour. this is what the roses and oasis put in the mix.
Perhaps the smits are more the creatives / Nikola Tesla at an agency, and the roses and oasis account planners / Edison (they completly embraced john grant new marketing manifesto rule of looking what works else where and using it in their own work). we all play a role. The Smits surely play(ed) theirs.

I like Boney M. Next door’s kid used to play Boney M, Rod Stewart and Chas ‘n’ Dave albums non-stop over and over again. They’re all a bit like wallpaper for me now. You spend so much time in a room you don’t even notice what’s on the walls anymore. That’s how I feel about Boney M – pleasant but mindless. I’d dance to it in public though. The Smiths I wouldn’t.
Not that I’ve been asked, or is in that anyway relevant to the original post.
